Image Sizing for our club competition
From the start of 2011, the club has decided to start enforcing size restrictions on digital competition submissions.
Images must be no larger than 1024 pixels on the horizontal and 768 pixels on the vertical (see illustration below), and a maximum file size of 500 kilobytes
Images that do not fall within these limits will be disqualified from that months competition
There are numerous ways to resize digital images and everybody has their favourite method. For those that aren't sure, have a look at the tutorial on the "Image Resizing" page.
If you're still not sure, ask someone.
Remember the maximum file size for projected images is 500 kilobytes
Maximum horizontal pixels is 1024
Maximum vertical pixels is 768
A portrait format image can only be 768 pixels tall, but any width up to 768 at which point it would no longer be portrait format as it would be a square, greater than 768 wide it would of course become landscape format and subject to the upper width limit of 1024 pixels.
New file naming requirements to make it easier to organise our monthly competition
Each digital file should be named with the entrant's first initial and surname, and the name of the image.
Example - jblogs windy weather.jpg
Printed images will have on the back a title and author's name.
Competitions
At each meeting the Club holds a competition for members to submit their work. You might find the idea that someone else gets to comment on your work a little daunting, but rest assured that this is an important part of the learning process. Monthly competitions are judged by our own members and all comments are designed to be constructive. Showing your work and getting people to comment on it will certainly help your photography. So don't be scared about what a judge might say.
You might also feel that your work isn't good enough to show to others. Don't worry too much about that, your work may be much better than you think. If you are a beginner, you will only improve by showing your work to others and having them comment on it. Please note that because work is judged by our own members, all comments are constructive and designed to help you get better shots.
The Club holds two monthly competitions. Unless otherwise stated the subject for these competitions is open. That means that you can take whatever you like. Occasionally, we might have a set subject for all of us to exercise our minds on, but members are always given a few prior warning of this. Members can enter up to three images in each category of the monthly competition.

Open print category:
Due to a declining interest in our printed categories, we have combined small and large prints into an open print category. Prints can range from those produced at a minilab through to A4 and A3 sizes. Your images can either be in colour or black and white, but must not exceed 16x20 inches in size, including the mount.
You may see that some of the members have put their photos into mounts. That is purely their own choice and many have a few mounts that they re-use. There is no requirement to mount your images and they are judged on their photographic quality only, however an added bonus is that your print has some protection when placed in a mount. A number of members have mat cutting equipment which you can arrange to borrow if you would like to make your own.
Projected Images category:
The second category is for digital submissions.
Entries are submitted via email to our competitions convener, Terry Walker, or can be provided on disc at the meeting the month prior to the competition. Images are required to be no longer than 1024 pixels on the horizontal side and 768 on the vertical, with the maximum file size of 500kb.
Our competition entries are judged anonymously, so prints need to provided in a bag or similar with your details, and they will then be assigned a number for judging. Your image or mount is not permitted to have any identifying features. Digital images are presented to the judges with the members name removed prior to judging.
Our current system has two judges working together using set criteria, and awarding points out of 15, 5 possible points in each of Technical, Composition and Impact. First, second and third placings are awarded, along with Highly Commended awards to those images that are of a high standard, but not placed. Comments are given about these images, and scores are made available for all entries. If further critique is required, feel free to bring your image to one of our critiquing sessions, or just ask another member.
Annual Competition
The Club also has an annual competition. The same categories and sizes apply as our monthly competitions, but images must have been taken in the previous twelve months. A further section is the Best Activity Image, where the image must have been taken at either a LPS or TRPF activity in the previous 12 months. They are submitted at our October meeting and the images are judged and results are announced at our Christmas Dinner in December. In addition, there is a cumulative points award given for both printed and projected images categories, with points gained by each entry, Highly Commended and placing gained in each competition throughout the year.
