The Past
The Launceston Photographic Society was formed in the latter part of the 1940s to promote the hobby among the city's residents. Prominent early members of the Society were HJ King, one of Tasmania's finest amateur photographers, Bill Gellie and Fred Smithies.
Photography has changed greatly since the six decades of the Society's existence. In those early days black and white tended to be dominant, but then colour took over, firstly in the form of slides then colour prints as they became cheaper and more easily available.
The Present
Currently, while some photographers continue to use film and slide, most members have eagerly embraced the digital world. At each meeting the club holds a competition for members to submit their work, in the categories of small print, large print and projected images. Monthly competitions are judged by our own members and all comments are designed to be constructive and designed to help you get better shots. Showing your work and getting people to comment on it will certainly help your photography. However, members need only enter competitions when they feel they are ready.
In addition, we run a program which includes guest speakers, sometimes a well known photographer or industry expert, or one of our club members sharing their expertise. Various topics are covered from camera equipment through to Photoshop techniques. These nights are always informative as well as being educational and very rewarding.
Additional outings are organised in response to interest from members. We also have a club library with photography magazines and books for members to borrow.
The Future
Photography remains a constantly changing art form, but since the late forties the Launceston Photographic Society has provided an opportunity for enthusiasts to get together and explore and improve their skills in a fascinating hobby. Looking ahead, our club seeks to continue to work at meeting the needs of our members, and welcomes suggestions for areas of interest to be addressed. So please feel free to let the committee know about anything you would like to see happen.
